Metro Times, 01 Sep 2010 - Marijuana Raids Could End Up Answering Key Legal Questions Last week proved to be a bad one along two fronts in the ongoing battle against the police state. At about the same time a Wayne County Circuit Court judge was upholding a Detroit Election Commission action to keep a pro-marijuana measure off the November ballot, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and Prosecutor Jessica Cooper were holding a press conference to triumphantly display the haul of pot, marijuana-infused edibles and a few guns confiscated during a series of raids carried out on dispensaries and private homes.
The widespread belief that marijuana users will eventually and inevitably move on to harder drugs has yet more evidence against it with the release of a new study from the University of New Hampshire.Whether teenagers who smoked pot will use other illegal drugs as young adults has a lot more to do with factors such as employment status and stress, according to the new research, reports Science News. In fact, the strongest predictor of whether someone will use hard drugs is their race/ethnicity, not whether they ever used marijuana."In light of these findings, we urge U.S. drug control policymakers to consider stress and life-course approaches in their pursuit of solutions to the 'drug problem,' " wrote UNH associate professors of sociology Karen Van Gundy and Cesar Rebellon.
An abandoned boat carrying about 1,100 pounds of marijuana drifted ashore this week on a Treasure Coast island in Florida.A Hutchinson Island resident called the U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday morning, thinking the drifting 33-foot boat might be experiencing some sort of trouble, reports Will Greenlee at TCPalm. But as the vessel came close to shore, she said a man with no shirt or shoes jumped out and ran away.St. Lucie County deputies and federal agents searched the boat, which came ashore about 6:40 a.m., and found about 1,100 pounds of neatly packaged marijuana they claimed was worth an estimated $1 million.
In an unusual alliance, Sacramento dispensary CannaCare had been running an advertisement on Cal Expo's digital billboard along Interstate 80. But Cal Expo, a unit of California government which puts on the state fair, unaccountably got paranoid and decided to nix the ad."Although we haven't had any complaints, we discussed it internally and decided it wasn't appropriate," said Cal Expo Assistant General Manager Brian May. So it looks like the state agency won't be selling any more ad space to the local cannabis shop.So how did Cal Expo officials go about killing the pot billboard? Documents show that agency bigwigs approved a "morality clause" against marijuana advertising, report Hugh Biggar and Nick Miller at the Sacramento News & Review. That's right, folks: Marijuana may be used for medical purposes, but it's still "immoral," according to these mental midgets.

I remember when there was one collective in Sacramento and it was River City Patient Center. These pioneers foraged new territories and brought access to the Capitol when nobody else would. Their courage and strength forged the road that now is populated by safe access collectives of all shapes and sizes. River City was raided in September of 2007 and the family of friendly faces were torn apart and left for dead. What was once Sacramento's most successful and compassionate collective had their lives turned upside down by the ignorant policies of the former administration.

Well from the ashes comes the Phoenix. River City Phoenix has re-opened its doors right across the parking lot from their old home. They have the same friendly staffers and from what i hear a delightful menu. This is a great tradition of people who founded the Sacramento movement as we know it today. If you have not been by yet, you should go by and at the very least say thanks. Their new facility is beautiful and welcoming. It is your duty as a patient in Sacramento to go by and support these guys who have gotten up, dusted themselves off, and have continued their mission of providing for patients. I hope they get back to serving as many patients as they were and then some. This should be great news for anyone in the Sacramento area.

The collective is at 1508 El Camino at Van Ness. Yes. I am schilling for this spot, not because they asked me to but because they deserve it. This is a historic development and all Sac patient owe it to themselves to stop in and say hello to the local founding fathers. This is an inspiration to anyone who has been through the shit and for that I thank them.

<![CDATA[
Medical marijuana is a hot topic in Illinois, which could become the next state to legalize medicinal use of the herb. But the seeming inevitability of loosening laws surrounding cannabis means that the usual suspects, i.e., law-enforcement types, are saying some really dumb things in public. And it also unfortunately means that some lazy reporters are letting them get away with it."Medical marijuana is a misnomer. No such thing exists," said Norma Kauzlarich, who prosecutes drug cases as an assistant state's attorney in Rock Island County, Ill."It's marijuana -- simply, plain -- just marijuana," Kauzlarich helpfully informs us, reports John David of WQAD, who could really use some brushing up on his "both sides of the story" skills. It seems that no matter how dumb a statement reporter David's interview subjects utter, it isn't sufficient to kick in his repertorial instincts to ask the obvious follow-up question or to make challenge that practically begs to be made.Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group Director Chris Endress warned about the "problems generated in states like Colorado and California.""These pot clubs bring crime and violence," said Endress. "We just don't need it. It's just not worth it."

The next time somebody tells you Prop 19 isn't needed because "marijuana is already practically legal in California," call 'em on their bullshit. California reported nearly the same number of marijuana arrests in 2009 as in the previous year, which set a record all-time high for pot busts. In 2009, there were 17,008 felony and 61,164 misdemeanor marijuana arrests in California, for a total of 78,172.In 2008, there were 17,126 marijuana felonies and 61,388 misdemeanors, for a total of 78,514. This was the highest number of marijuana arrests since pot was decriminalized in California in 1976, according to Dale Gieringer of California NORML."The record is clear that the war on marijuana has failed," Gieringer told Toke of the Town Wednesday afternoon.

Record Searchlight, 01 Sep 2010 - RED BLUFF - Tehama County's controversial ban on medical marijuana dispensaries will continue another year, after county supervisors on Tuesday voted 4-1 for an extension. "I think this stands in the door of patients getting their rights," said Supervisor Charlie Willard in his dissent. He noted it had been nearly a year since the moratorium - which he opposed - was first passed and questioned whether another 12 months would yield a viable replacement.

The Union, 31 Aug 2010 - I'll bet a beer that most of you would have no problem finding a gin and tonic, if booze was illegal today. Guys like Al Capone would see to that. Big Al, they say, was knocking down $60 million per year in the late 1920s from alcohol alone, during a period when our government brain trust decided the best way to get people to sober up was to pass an 18th Amendment banning the sale, transportation and manufacturing of alcohol in America.
