(07-03) 17:40 PDT SAN LEANDRO -- A San Leandro man shot and killed while pumping gas in unincorporated Alameda County had been followed from a medical marijuana club by two men who stole drugs from him before the slaying, authorities said today.
Gary Jones, 37, of San Leandro was shot about 4 p.m. Thursday at the ABE gas station Mission and Lewelling boulevards.
Surveillance cameras from nearby businesses showed two men in a tan or light-gold, 1990s Plymouth or Chrysler van following Jones after he left the Compassionate Patient Cooperative up the street on Mission Boulevard, sheriff's Sgt. Scott Dudek said.
The passenger stole a half-ounce of medical marijuana from Jones' car, Dudek said. Jones was paying for his gas, saw what happened, confronted the men and was shot by the driver, Dudek said.
Jones and his fiancee, Anna Hampton, had planned to move from the area to Oregon because of concerns over crime, Dudek said.

Surveillance Tape Shows Hayward Murder
Posted July 3, 2007 at 7:10 p.m.
HAYWARD (KRON) -- Surveillance tape may be all that's needed to find the people responsible for the murder of a Hayward man just minutes after he left an Alameda County pot club.
KRON 4's Jeff Bush reviewed the tape in which you can see Gary Jones leaving the club and getting in his car. Minutes later that tape shows Jones at a gasoline station. A thief driving a van then gets into Jones' car and steals his marijuana. When Jones spots the theft, witnesses say the van's driver shot the man and then ran him over.
"I want them caught now not a year from now," Jones' mother Jan told Jeff. "I want them caught now."
Investigators say it appears the killers showed no hesitation or remorse.
"One of the persons actually said that after the shooting they witnessed both suspects laughing so that proves where we're going with this," Alameda County Sheriff's Dept. Sgt. Scott Dudek said. "We're dealing with two animals."
Investigators say it appears the van is a 1991 or 1994 Plymouth or Chrysler minivan with silver or gold pain. The license plate appears to be off center in the back of the vehicle.
Family members say the victim was getting ready to move to Oregon in part because of the high crime rate in the Bay Area.
If you know anything about this crime, contact Alameda County sheriff's deputies or your local authorities.
